Wandering the Water of Leith, Edinburgh

I walked from along the Water of Leith Haymarket through to Stockbridge early one Sunday morning, hoping to see some wildlife before the dog walkers and cyclists came out. This is only a small section of the nearly 13 mile path, that runs from the Peatland Hills to the Firth of Forth. I saw what could have been a mustelid – stoat or weasel – or, perhaps, an otter. It dashed from the rocks by the stream to some bushes as I approached, and so I can’t confirm.

I did get to see a white throated dipper, dashing about, foraging for food in and on the fast moving but shallow water.
